10 Google Business Profile Mistakes That Cost Local Businesses Enquiries
Many business owners think of their Google Business Profile as something they set up once and leave alone. The reality is very different. For many businesses, your Google Business Profile is one of the first things potential customers see.
Before they visit your website.
Before they call.
Before they compare businesses.
They’re already deciding whether your business looks trustworthy enough to contact. Small issues that seem insignificant can quietly cost enquiries.
Here are ten of the most common mistakes I see.
1. Your profile information has gone out of date
A Google Business Profile should accurately reflect the business customers are dealing with today. Problems can creep in when a profile has been left unchecked for too long.
That might include:
old opening hours
outdated services
incorrect phone numbers
broken website links
old photos
missing changes to the way the business operates
Google recommends keeping Business Profile information complete and accurate. That helps Google understand the business and also gives customers confidence that the information they’re seeing can be trusted.
2. Your photos are poor quality
Photos influence how people perceive your business. Blurry images, dark photos, outdated branding and empty shopfronts can all weaken trust.
You don’t need professional photography every week, but your photos should be clear, current and representative of the business. For many customers, those images are part of the decision-making process before they ever contact you.
3. Your photos don’t show enough about the business
Customers want evidence.
They want to know:
what you do
what your work looks like
where you work
who they’re dealing with
For a tradie, that might mean completed jobs, vehicles or equipment.
For a clinic, it might mean the team and treatment space.
For a retail business, it might mean products and the storefront.
The goal isn’t to upload photos simply for the sake of having more. It’s to give potential customers a clearer picture of the business.
4. Your business information isn’t accurate
Incorrect opening hours.
Old phone numbers.
Outdated services.
Wrong service areas.
Broken website links.
These small issues create unnecessary doubt. Review your profile regularly and make sure every detail is still correct. If the business changes, the profile should change with it.
5. You haven’t chosen the right business categories
Your primary category is one of the clearest ways to tell Google what type of business you operate. Choose the most specific category that accurately describes the business. Then add extra categories only where they genuinely apply. More categories do not automatically mean better visibility. The goal is accuracy.
6. You’re not responding to reviews
Customers read more than the reviews themselves. They also read your responses. Replying to reviews shows that customer feedback is noticed and valued. You don’t need to write a long response every time. A short, genuine reply is usually enough.
7. Your services aren’t listed properly
Many businesses never properly review the Services section after the profile is first created. Your services should reflect what the business actually offers today. If someone can’t quickly see whether you provide what they need, they may move on to another business. Keep the list accurate, relevant and easy to understand.
8. Your website doesn’t match your Google Business Profile
Your website and Google Business Profile should tell the same story.
That means the same:
business name
services
location
contact details
service areas
overall positioning
If the information differs, customers can start questioning which version is correct. Consistency helps people feel confident that they’ve found the right business.
9. You’re not using Google Posts to share useful updates
Google Posts can be used to share things such as:
recent work
service updates
business news
events
offers
useful website content
I don’t treat Google Posts as a ranking shortcut. Google does not say that posting frequently directly improves local ranking. Their value is in keeping the profile useful and giving potential customers more current information about the business.
10. You treat Google as a standalone marketing tool
This is one of the biggest mistakes. Customers don’t look at your Google Business Profile in isolation.
They move between:
Google
your website
reviews
Facebook
Instagram
other online mentions
They’re comparing the whole picture. If one platform creates doubt, the others have to work harder to rebuild confidence. Your online setup should work together.
Your Google Business Profile is more than a directory listing
A well-maintained Google Business Profile does more than help people find your business. It helps people decide whether to choose it.
Google says local results are mainly based on:
relevance, distance and prominence.
There is no single optimisation trick that guarantees a higher position in Google Maps. The goal is to give Google accurate information about the business while giving potential customers enough confidence to make contact.
Not sure whether your Google Business Profile is helping or hurting your business?
Many business owners become so familiar with their own profile that they stop noticing what’s missing. An Online Setup Review looks at your Google Business Profile, website and wider online presence to identify opportunities to improve trust, visibility and enquiries. Sometimes the biggest improvements come from fixing a few small things that have been overlooked.
