Squarespace Website Design: Is It Right for Your Small Business?

If you're looking at building a new website for your small business, you've probably come across Squarespace. It is popular with small businesses because it can produce professional-looking websites without requiring a complicated custom development process.

But is Squarespace actually a good choice for a business website? For many small and service-based businesses, yes - Squarespace can be an excellent platform when the website is planned and built properly.

The important part is that choosing Squarespace doesn't automatically give you an effective website. The platform provides the tools. You still need the right structure, content, SEO, messaging and customer journey behind it.

What is Squarespace?

Squarespace is a website-building platform that allows businesses to manage their website, pages, images, forms, blogs and other content through one central system. For a small business, that can make website ownership considerably easier. Rather than having a website that requires a developer every time you want to update a photo, change some wording or add a new service, Squarespace gives business owners much more control over the site once it has been built.

That is one of the main reasons I use Squarespace for many of the websites I build through NQ Social Collective. A small business usually doesn't need an unnecessarily complicated website.

It needs one that is:

  • professional

  • clear

  • easy for customers to navigate

  • easy to maintain

  • mobile-friendly

  • structured properly for search

  • capable of growing with the business

For the right business, Squarespace does that very well.

Is Squarespace good for small businesses?

For many small and service-based businesses in Townsville and across North Queensland, particularly those that need their website to generate enquiries, explain their services and build trust, Squarespace can be a strong option.

That can include businesses such as:

  • builders and trades

  • consultants

  • allied health and clinics

  • professional services

  • real estate and property businesses

  • beauty and wellness businesses

  • local service providers

The key question isn't really “Is Squarespace a good platform?”

It is “Can Squarespace do what my particular business needs its website to do?”

For a typical Townsville small business needing service pages, enquiry forms, project galleries, testimonials, blogs, contact information and strong local SEO foundations, the answer will often be yes.

What I like about Squarespace for small business websites

1. The business owner can retain control

This is one of the biggest advantages. I've come across businesses paying ongoing website fees for years while having surprisingly little access to, or control over, the website itself. Sometimes they cannot make basic changes without contacting the original provider. Sometimes they don't even know where their domain, website or hosting is registered. A business website should be a business asset.

With Squarespace, the business can have its own account and retain access to the website after the build is completed. That means you're not automatically dependent on the person who built it forever.

2. It works well for straightforward service businesses

Most small businesses don't need complicated websites. A plumber doesn't necessarily need 40 pages. Neither does a cabinetmaker, counsellor, roofing business or consultant.

What they usually need is a clear website that tells people:

  • what the business does

  • where it operates

  • what services are available

  • why someone should trust it

  • how to make contact

Squarespace is well suited to building that type of website without creating unnecessary complexity.

For many Townsville and North Queensland businesses, that is exactly what is needed - a professional website that is easy to understand and makes it simple for a potential customer to take the next step.

3. It has useful SEO foundations built in

There is a misconception that you can't rank well on Google with a Squarespace website. That isn't the issue. Squarespace includes a number of useful technical SEO foundations, including mobile optimisation, automatically generated sitemaps, structured data and the ability to manage page titles and SEO descriptions.

But that doesn't mean simply launching a Squarespace website will make you rank. You still need to tell Google clearly what the business does.

That means thinking about:

  • page structure

  • service pages

  • location relevance

  • headings

  • website copy

  • internal links

  • image descriptions

  • useful content

  • Google Search Console

  • the relationship between your website and Google Business Profile

The website platform can provide the foundation. SEO strategy is what you build on top of it.

This is particularly important for local businesses competing for searches such as electrician Townsville, builder Townsville or website design Townsville. A well-built website should make it easier for Google to understand both the services you provide and the areas you serve.

4. It's relatively easy to keep current

Your website shouldn't remain untouched for five years. Businesses change. You might add a service, complete new projects, change your team, expand your service area or simply get much better photos of your work.

Being able to update your website without rebuilding the entire thing makes it easier for the website to evolve with the business. That matters because an outdated website can create a completely different impression of your business from the one customers get when they see your current work elsewhere.

What Squarespace won't do for you

This is where the distinction matters. Squarespace can give you the tools to build a good website. It cannot decide what your website should say. It cannot automatically understand what your customers need to know before they'll enquire. And it cannot fix poor website strategy simply by providing a nice-looking template.

I've seen websites that look perfectly professional but still make it difficult to work out:

  • exactly what the business does

  • where it operates

  • which service someone needs

  • what makes the business different

  • how to take the next step

That isn't really a Squarespace problem. It's a website strategy problem.

Can a Squarespace website rank on Google?

Yes, a Squarespace website can rank on Google. But the fact that it was built on Squarespace isn't what makes it rank. A website still needs useful, relevant content and a structure that helps both customers and search engines understand the business.

For a local business, I would also want the website to clearly support the information shown through its Google Business Profile. If Google says you provide one set of services but the website says something different, the overall online presence becomes less clear.

Your website, Google Business Profile and other online platforms should reinforce the same business. That's why I generally don't approach website design as an isolated job. The website needs to fit into the wider online setup.

For businesses in Townsville and North Queensland, that means the website should support the same local relevance and service information customers are seeing elsewhere online.

When might Squarespace not be the right choice?

Squarespace isn't the perfect platform for every business. A different solution may be more appropriate if your business requires highly customised software functionality, extremely complex integrations, specialised databases or other advanced development requirements.

That's why I wouldn't recommend choosing a website platform purely because someone told you one particular system was “the best”. Start with what the website actually needs to achieve. Then choose the platform capable of doing that effectively.

For the majority of local service businesses I work with around Townsville and North Queensland, the requirements are usually much more straightforward:
Get found. Build trust. Explain the service. Make it easy to enquire.

For that type of website, Squarespace is often a very practical fit.

Should you build your Squarespace website yourself?

You certainly can. Squarespace has been designed so people without extensive coding knowledge can build and maintain websites. But there is a difference between being able to put a website online and knowing how the website should be structured commercially.

The most common DIY problem isn't usually that the website looks terrible. It's that the owner has built it from the perspective of someone who already understands the business. A new customer doesn't have that knowledge.

They need to immediately understand what you do, whether you work in their area, whether you can solve their problem and what they're supposed to do next. That's where website strategy becomes more valuable than simply choosing a template.

A professional-looking website is useful. A website that helps the right people find you, understand you and contact you is considerably more valuable.

What should a good Squarespace small business website include?

The exact structure will depend on your business, but a strong small-business website should generally make your services, location and next step extremely clear. It should also include enough information to build confidence.

That might mean:

  • dedicated service information

  • clear Townsville or regional service-area information

  • genuine project or business photos

  • customer reviews or testimonials

  • frequently asked questions

  • obvious calls to action

  • simple contact or enquiry options

  • useful supporting content

The goal isn't to fill the website with pages for the sake of having more pages. Every page should have a reason to exist. If a service is commercially important, competitive or something people actively search for, it may deserve its own page rather than being buried inside a few lines on the homepage. That can make the website stronger for both customers and search engines.

Is Squarespace right for your business?

If you're a small or service-based business that needs a professional website without an unnecessarily complicated system behind it, Squarespace is certainly worth considering.

It's particularly well suited to businesses that want a website they can continue to access and manage themselves. But choosing Squarespace is only the starting point. The real value comes from building the website around:

what your customers are searching for, what they need to know and what will give them enough confidence to contact you.

That's ultimately what a business website should do.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Squarespace good for SEO?

Squarespace provides useful technical SEO foundations, but SEO still depends heavily on how your website is structured and what content you publish. Service pages, location relevance, website copy, internal linking and ongoing content all matter.

Can a Squarespace website rank locally in Townsville?

Yes. A properly structured Squarespace website can support local search visibility in Townsville. The website should clearly communicate your services and location while working alongside your Google Business Profile and wider local SEO strategy.

Is Squarespace suitable for tradies?

For many tradies, yes. A straightforward Squarespace website can showcase services, service areas, previous work, reviews and contact options without creating an overly complicated site.

Can I update my Squarespace website myself?

Yes. One of Squarespace's advantages for small businesses is that owners can be given access to manage their website and make straightforward content updates themselves.

Should I use Squarespace or have a completely custom website built?

It depends on what your business actually needs. If you require highly specialised functionality, a custom development solution may be appropriate. For many service businesses, however, a well-planned Squarespace site provides everything required without unnecessary complexity.

Do I need a separate page for every service?

Not always. Some services can sit comfortably together on one page, while more important or competitive services may benefit from having their own dedicated page. The decision should be based on what customers are searching for, how important the service is commercially and whether a separate page would provide genuinely useful information.
